“My name is Anita Asienga from Kenya and this is My HerCyberStory.

I am a security analyst at a tier-one bank in Kenya and a proud CyberGirls alumna.

My journey in cybersecurity has been profoundly transformative, particularly through the CyberGirls Fellowship.

Ever since I discovered my passion for cybersecurity, I was determined to become a CyberGirl. I didn’t get in the first time I applied, but I didn’t let that deter me. My persistence paid off when I finally got accepted on my second attempt.

Getting into the CyberGirls Program meant fully committing to the fellowship. I had to restructure my schedule dramatically.

My days started at 5:00 AM and often extended until midnight. This rigorous routine was necessary due to my prior commitment as a cybersecurity research scholar at Strathmore University.

During challenging days when my energy waned, I leaned on my fellow CyberGirls, who I fondly call my ‘cybersisters,’ and also relied on the CyberGirls mantra which kept me motivated.

I specialized in the Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT) track. The skills I acquired, are ones I utilize daily in my job.

The CyberGirls fellowship equipped me with essential non-technical skills like hard work, persistence, and time management. The STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) proved invaluable during the interview. The fellowship taught me how to effectively articulate my experiences and results, making a significant difference in my job application process.

After completing the fellowship, I secured my current role, and I can confidently say that my time in the fellowship prepared me thoroughly for the workload and responsibilities I now handle.

CyberGirls played a critical role in breaking several gender limitations in the cybersecurity field. The fellowship empowered me with confidence and skills to thrive. It provided a platform for women to showcase their talent, proving gender is not a barrier to success.

CyberGirls also dispelled the myth that women can’t balance demanding careers with life responsibilities, showing that with the right mindset and determination, women can excel in cybersecurity while managing other aspects of their lives effectively.

In conclusion, my journey in cybersecurity has been immensely rewarding, and being a part of CyberGirls was a pivotal experience that significantly shaped my career. The skills, knowledge, and confidence I gained from the fellowship continue to drive my success and inspire me to keep pushing the boundaries in the field of cybersecurity.”

CyberGirls Fellowship is Africa’s largest cybersecurity training and mentorship program for young women. An initiative of CyberSafe Foundation.
