Kosisochukwu Benjamin #HerCyberStory

“Despite having just one year of experience after completing  the CyberGirls program, I applied for a Security Tester role requiring three years of experience…and landed the job”

“My name is Kosisochukwu Benjamin, and this my #HerCyberStory.

In 2022, during the University academic staff strike in my country, I developed a strong interest in Cybersecurity. After sharing this interest on a Slack channel, my friend, who was a CyberGirl Fellow at the time, she introduced me to the CyberGirls Fellowship.

Eager to learn, I applied when there was a call for application and got accepted into the program.

Despite the challenge of balancing the Fellowship with my studies, I persevered, driven by determination and self-belief.

The fellowship taught me to seize opportunities, leading to my first internship offer in August 2022. Though the offer was later revoked due to academic commitments, I successfully completed both my semester and the fellowship.

In November 2023, I applied for a Security Tester role that required three years of work experience and despite having only one year post-fellowship.

The confidence I gained from the fellowship helped me convince HR that my skills were a perfect fit. In January 2024, after a successful interview, I was offered the position.

The CyberGirls Fellowship shattered the myth that Cybersecurity is male-dominated and reinforced that women are equally capable in technical roles. I am deeply grateful to CyberGirls Fellowship for their guidance and support.

The fellowship has been a transformative experience, profoundly shaping my career and mindset, and I continue to value its influence on my journey.”

CyberGirls Fellowship is Africa’s largest #cybersecurity training and mentorship program for young women. An initiative of CyberSafe Foundation.
