Mitchelle Chepkemoi #HerCyberStory

“A WhatsApp notification changed my life-says CyberGirls Alumnae now Cybersecurity Associate Consultant”

Mitchelle Chepkemoi

From tiny seeds, mighty oaks grow, and such is the tale of an inspiring young leader, Mitchelle Chepkemoi from Kenya. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and my belief that true success in leadership is measured not by personal triumphs, but by the blossoming of new leaders under our guidance. I want to also seize this opportunity to say thank you to my colleagues at CyberSafe Foundation, our community of mentors, coaches, facilitators, corporarte and individual donors, partner organizations, who help us create this magic. Without you, they’ll be no Mitchelle’s. Enjoy her story below.

Once upon a time in Nairobi, there was a young woman hungry for information, anxious to unravel the mysteries of the digital world. Her journey began when she enrolled in B.Tech (Computer Technology) at The Technical University of Kenya, an ambitious option given her previous difficulties with ‘ROM’ and ‘RAM’ in high school.

Undaunted, she immersed herself in technology, her fascination and curiosity eventually leading her to the field of cybersecurity. As she explored this complex domain, doubtful whispers began to surround her, as peers warned of the enormous challenges that lay ahead. She attempted to navigate the wide ocean of online cybersecurity courses, but quickly realized she needed a compass to find her way.

A single WhatsApp notice, as if by chance, illuminated her path. Knowing her interest in cybersecurity, a trusted friend had provided her a link to the CyberGirls Fellowship application. Mitchelle’s heart leapt with optimism; the program was free, and she, as an intern, lacked the means for a paid certification at the time.

She passed the interview process and went on a seven-month adventure, learning about cybersecurity with determination and grit in the CyberGirls Fellowship. She emerged from the SOC Analyst/Incident Response learning path as our best graduating fellow. Her hard work and dedication was swiftly rewarded with a job offer as a Cybersecurity Associate Consultant.

She is now a beacon of inspiration for others, teaching dedicated students in IT and cybersecurity, guided by her wisdom and experience. She is preparing to establish The CyberEffect, a free cybersecurity training program, with her co-founder, as a monument to the transformational power of education.

Mitchelle says, “My path would not have been possible without the constant support of CyberSafe Foundation and its supporters. They have shone a light in the darkness, inspiring young women like me, to aspire for the stars and conquer the enthralling world of cybersecurity.”

Congratulation Mitchelle, i am personally super proud of you.
